Mananthavady, Wayanad – In a vibrant initiative blending ancient martial arts with modern self-defense needs, the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation organized a specialized Kalaripayattu workshop for around 70 Student Police Cadet (SPC) students from Mananthavady Government High School. The session emphasized practical self-defense techniques, equipping both boys and girls with essential skills to counter prevalent forms of violence today.

Expert-Led Training in the Heart of Wayanad
The workshop was expertly guided by Thomas Gurukkal, Director of the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation, a renowned center in Mananthavady dedicated to preserving Kalaripayattu – one of the world’s oldest martial arts originating from Kerala. Rooted in physical conditioning, strikes, kicks, grappling, and weaponry, Kalaripayattu promotes not just combat prowess but also flexibility, strength, mental discipline, and spiritual growth.
Students actively engaged with traditional techniques adapted for self-defense, showcasing remarkable enthusiasm during practice. The program was seamlessly coordinated by SPC faculty-in-charge Mr. Kenan and Ms. Prajitha, who offered ongoing guidance and support.

Why Kalaripayattu Matters for Today’s Youth
This event underscores the rising role of traditional martial arts in fostering physical strength and mental confidence among young people. Beyond self-protection, Kalaripayattu training enhances endurance, stress relief, and cultural appreciation – benefits highlighted by local centers like Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation, which also offers women’s self-defense classes, yoga, meditation, and therapeutic massages in Wayanad’s serene landscapes.
Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation stands out for its comprehensive programs, including mass workshops for schools, making ancient practices accessible and relevant. As one of Mananthavady’s top Kalari training hubs, it continues to revive this battlefield-derived art, once compulsory in Kerala for battle readiness.
This workshop exemplifies how initiatives like those from the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation bridge heritage and empowerment, inspiring the next generation to embrace discipline and resilience
