A Grand Traditional Reception
The day’s proceedings commenced at 11:00 AM with a breathtaking traditional reception that set a tone of immense respect and discipline. The Chief Guest, Hon. Shri O.R. Kelu, Minister for SC/ST and Backward Classes Welfare, was welcomed with exceptional honor.
This spectacular reception was meticulously organized and executed by the dedicated Kalaripayattu students from the Foundation’s Kammana, Manjappara, and Vadakara centers. Dressed in their traditional Kalari attire, the students presented a beautiful, synchronized guard of honor that reflected the deep-rooted values of respect (gurudakshina) and humility taught within the Kalari. The Minister and the accompanying dignitaries were visibly moved by the passion, discipline, and warmth radiating from both the young learners and the senior practitioners.

The Inaugural Address: Empowering the Community
The formal inauguration was officially carried out by Hon. Minister Shri O.R. Kelu. In his inaugural address, the Minister praised the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Kerala’s cultural heritage. He emphasized the profound impact that traditional martial arts can have on youth empowerment, physical fitness, and mental resilience. The inaugural meeting was presided over by Mr. P. Viswanathan, the esteemed Chairman of the Kalpetta Municipality. In his presidential address, Mr. Viswanathan expressed his profound joy at having a prestigious institution like the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation establish a strong presence in Kalpetta. He assured the Foundation of the municipality’s continued support in their future endeavors to uplift the local youth.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, several prominent figures offered their felicitations. Kalpetta Municipality Councilors Smt. Chithra and Smt. Sajeev Gurukkal and Nishad T.N., as well as Secretary Vipinkumar, who all shared their gratitude and excitement for the successful launch of the new division.

Outlining the Vision: Building Focus and Discipline
One of the most pivotal moments of the ceremony was the detailed project presentation delivered by the Foundation’s Managing Director, K.F. Thomas Gurukkal.
Thomas Gurukkal took the stage to outline the expansive vision and upcoming initiatives of the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation for the Kalpetta region. He articulated how the new center will not merely be a training ground for physical combat, but a holistic institution dedicated to shaping character. He detailed comprehensive plans to introduce specialized training camps aimed at enhancing concentration, instilling rigorous discipline, and steering the youth toward a focused, drug-free lifestyle. By integrating physical agility with mental fortitude, the Foundation aims to equip students with the essential life skills needed to navigate the challenges of the modern world. His inspiring words resonated deeply with the parents and community leaders in the audience.
A Breathtaking Display of Martial Prowess

Following the formal addresses, the atmosphere shifted to one of pure electric energy as the highly anticipated Kalaripayattu demonstration began. This segment easily became the highlight of the day, captivating the absolute attention of everyone present.
Led by the exceptionally skilled M.S. Ganesh Gurukkal and Pranav K. Thomas, the demonstration featured a dynamic lineup of both young children and seasoned adult practitioners. The audience watched in awe as the performers showcased a series of complex maneuvers, ranging from basic Meippayattu (body conditioning exercises) to advanced armed combat techniques involving the Urumi (flexible sword), Kettukari (long stick), and Kuruvadi (short stick).
The agility, precision, and raw power displayed by the students—regardless of their age—were a spectacular visual treat. It served as a powerful live demonstration of the very principles Thomas Gurukkal had spoken about: focus, physical mastery, and unwavering dedication. The rhythmic clashing of weapons and the swift, gravity-defying leaps of the practitioners drew thunderous applause from the captivated crowd.
A Celebration of Community
The inaugural event was a massive draw, with an impressive turnout of around 400 people, comprising children, parents, local residents, and martial arts aficionados. This overwhelming response is a clear indicator of the community’s eagerness and support for the Foundation’s expansion into Kalpetta.
As the formal events and breathtaking demonstrations drew to a close around 1:00 PM, the spirit of camaraderie continued. True to Kerala’s rich traditions of hospitality, a grand communal lunch was arranged for all the attendees. Sharing a meal together served as the perfect conclusion to the day, fostering a sense of unity and family among the Foundation’s leadership, the students, the distinguished guests, and the local community.
