In a momentous gathering that celebrated Kerala’s ancient martial heritage, Kadathanadan Kalari Sangam recently commemorated its 25th anniversary with grandeur and cultural reverence. The celebration not only honored our journey in preserving Kalaripayattu—the mother of all martial arts—but also reinforced our commitment to passing this sacred knowledge to future generations.

Distinguished Guests Honor Kerala’s Martial Heritage

The celebration was inaugurated by the honorable Shri. O.R. Kelu, Minister of Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes, whose presence underscored the cultural significance of our institution. The event was further elevated by our esteemed chief guest, Padmashri Meenakshi Amma Gurukkal, a legendary figure in Kalaripayattu whose lifetime dedication to this ancient art form has earned her national recognition.

As the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony illuminated the venue, it symbolized the continuing flame of knowledge that has been carefully tended at our Wayanad-based Kalari school for a quarter century.

Preserving Ancient Wisdom in Modern Times

Since our establishment in Wayanad in 2000 under the guidance of K.F. Thomas Gurukkal, Kadathanadan Kalari Sangam has remained steadfast in its mission to preserve the authentic techniques and spiritual essence of Kalaripayattu. Our school traces its lineage back to 1949 when it was founded by four master Gurukkals in Vadakara, Kerala, before being brought to the lush mountains of Wayanad in 1962.

The anniversary celebration reflected on this rich history while showcasing how our traditional Kalari training continues to balance mind, body, and soul in today’s fast-paced world.

A Holistic Approach to Martial Arts Training

What distinguishes Kadathanadan Kalari Sangam is our comprehensive approach to Kalaripayattu training. Beyond combat techniques, we emphasize the spiritual dimensions, healing practices, and philosophical foundations that make this martial art a complete way of life.

Our curriculum encompasses:

  • Traditional Kalaripayattu combat training
  • Kalari Ayurveda massage and healing
  • Marma treatment (vital pressure points)
  • Meditation and spiritual practices
  • Women’s self-defense techniques
  • Yoga and holistic wellness

This integrated approach has attracted students from across India and around the world to our peaceful organic farm setting in Wayanad, where five veteran Gurukkals continue to impart this ancient wisdom.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Legacy

As we celebrate this milestone, Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation remains committed to its vision of not only preserving Kalaripayattu but also revitalizing other endangered Indian arts and skills. Our ongoing projects in medicinal plant cultivation, Ayurvedic research, and cultural collaboration ensure that these precious traditions continue to thrive.

The overwhelming community support at our anniversary celebration reinforces that the ancient art of Kalaripayattu remains relevant and valued in contemporary society. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us in commemorating this significant milestone.
