The heritage of Kerala’s soil—the ancient and venerable art of Kalaripayattu—has found a renewed resonance this summer. In a landmark collaboration aimed at preserving tradition while fostering modern civic responsibility, the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation (KKF), in partnership with the Buimerc India Foundation, has officially inaugurated its Free Summer Kalaripayattu Training Camps.
Spanning five strategic locations and reaching hundreds of young aspirants, this initiative is more than a martial arts workshop; it is a holistic movement toward youth empowerment and cultural revitalization.

A Grand Inauguration by a Living Legend
The program’s journey began with an atmosphere of reverence and high energy in Kalpetta. The joint inaugural ceremony was graced by none other than Padma Shri Meenakshi Amma, the matriarch of Kalaripayattu and a symbol of timeless physical and mental fortitude. Her presence served as a bridge between the ancient Gurukula system and the modern aspirations of the youth.
In her inaugural address, Meenakshi Amma emphasized that Kalaripayattu is not merely a tool for combat but a discipline for life. By lighting the ceremonial lamp, she signaled the commencement of a month-and-a-half-long journey for students across five key centers:
- Puthuppanam
- Chombala
- Kalpetta
- Kammana
- Manjappara

The Vision: A Holistic Approach to Martial Arts
While Kalaripayattu is the soul of the camp, the Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation has designed a curriculum that looks beyond the physical “Meythari” (body exercises). As explained by K.F. Thomas Gurukkal, the Managing Director of the Foundation, the project’s core objective is the comprehensive personality development of every participant.
“We are not just training fighters; we are nurturing responsible, empathetic, and resilient citizens,” stated Thomas Gurukkal during his project briefing. “Through this camp, we aim to introduce the new generation to their roots while equipping them with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern world.”
The Sunday Immersive Experience
A unique feature of this program is the intensive full-day Sunday sessions. Recognizing that true growth requires time and focus, the foundation has curated a “Sundays at the Kalari” series that runs from morning until evening. These sessions are a blend of physical discipline and intellectual stimulation, covering:
- Traditional Kalaripayattu: Mastery of movement, flexibility, and the foundational stances.
- Literary & Theatre Workshops: Encouraging creative expression through storytelling, scripts, and dramatic arts to build confidence and communication skills.
- Environmental Stewardship: Bird watching and organic farming sessions designed to reconnect students with nature—an essential element of the Prakriti-centric philosophy of Kalari.
- Social Awareness: Comprehensive sessions on anti-drug awareness, helping children understand the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of a clean, disciplined lifestyle.
- Cultural Roots: Folk song (Naadan Paattu) sessions to keep the rhythmic oral traditions of Kerala alive.
- Life Skills: Personality development classes aimed at emotional intelligence, leadership, and public speaking.
Safety and Civic Duty: The Red Cross Collaboration
In a significant addition to the curriculum, the camp includes specialized First Aid and Emergency Response Training conducted by the Indian Red Cross. This ensures that the children are not only physically capable but also practically prepared to handle emergencies, providing a vital service to their families and communities.
A Spectacle of Skill and Discipline
The inaugural day concluded with a breathtaking demonstration by students representing all five centers. Under the expert guidance of K.K. Sajeev Kumar Gurukkal, M.S. Ganesh Gurukkal, and K.P. Manoj Gurukkal, the young practitioners showcased the agility and focus they have already begun to cultivate. The event saw a turnout of over 350 attendees, including parents, local leaders, and martial arts enthusiasts, reflecting the deep community support for the foundation’s work.
Distinguished Guests and Supporters
The success of the event was bolstered by the participation of local dignitaries:
- Councilor Chitra (Kalpetta Municipality): Presided over the function and lauded the foundation’s commitment to providing free, high-quality training to the underprivileged.
- Geetha N.P. (District Women Protection Officer): Offered her felicitations, highlighting how such training programs contribute to the safety and empowerment of young girls and women.
The Strategic Partnership: Kadathanadan Kalari and Buimerc India
This massive undertaking is made possible through the full financial support of the Buimerc India Foundation. This partnership represents a gold standard in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), where institutional resources meet grassroots expertise. By removing the financial barrier to entry, Buimerc and KKF have ensured that the “martial art of the gods” is accessible to every child, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Looking Forward
As the camps progress over the next six weeks, the centers at Puthuppanam, Chombala, Kalpetta, Kammana, and Manjappara will become hubs of discipline and discovery. The Kadathanadan Kalari Foundation remains dedicated to the belief that Kalaripayattu is a heritage that belongs to the future, not just the past.
By the end of this summer, these hundreds of children will return to their schools not just with stronger bodies, but with a deeper understanding of their culture, a commitment to social responsibility, and the “Kalari spirit” of courage and compassion.
